Traditional Ayurveda Enriched with Evidence, Data & Protocols
Similar to Ilakkizhi, Podikkizhi is another method of therapeutic sweating. In this the body is fomented thoroughly with linen bundles (Kizhis) containing medicine in powder form. Horse gram, black gram, sesame seeds, and other curative ingredients are powdered and tied up in the bundles. Two therapists foment on either side of the patient, an attendant supplies them with warmed kizhis and warm up the used ones. Four kizhis must be kept ready for use at all times. It is important that the kizhis retain a constant temperature, tolerable to the patent throughout the treatment. The treatment is over once fomentation has been carried out with the patient in all the seven standard positions. Sometimes instead of one of the supine positions the patient is made to lie face down. After fomentation the patient’s body is wiped clean with a towel. This is followed by a short period of rest and the bath. This treatment is very good for treating all ailments due to vitiated Vata and Kapha Doshas.
